Théatre National > Grande Salle
Fanfares, brass sections and gypsy melodies get the Festival des Libertés 2012 off to a swinging start with the super big band of the Balkans, Taraf de Haïdouks & the Kocani Orchestra. The result of a merger between two legendary groups, 26 awesome musicians of great talent and energy deploy some stunning, dynamic and sophisticated orchestrations in which the fiery violins, twirling cymbals and accordions of the Taraf de Haïdouks duel with the powerful brass section and percussion of the Kocani Orchestra. It’s an encounter of styles, generations and musicians of varied origins and cultures: Romanian-speaking Orthodox Christian Romanies and Macedonian-speaking Sufi Muslims. And their compositions certainly draw on all available sources, encompassing traditional Romanian folk, urban Balkan pop, medieval ballads, ‘oriental fanfare’ music, along with Turkish, Greek, Jewish and even Indian influences.
