After ten years away from the stage, Bertrand Cantat has launched his comeback by forming the band Détroit with bassist Pascal Humbert (16 Horsepower). Détroit: the French word for a strait, a passage between two continents, between new home ports and haunted memories, between the chaos of Noir Désir and a calmer Horizon. The music is softer, hypnotic, sometimes stifling but always well-controlled. A stoner rock album, like the soundtrack to a road movie of the mind for a boundless escape. Purified introspection, the words are intimate without being shameless. The singer’s diction is as precise as ever and his voice just as moving. On stage, Cantat still mesmerizes: magnetic, taut, sensitive, filled with rage. With greater reserve and wisdom, in between strength and fragility. For two hours, he sails between new songs and the greatest hits of Noir Désir, each tinged with Détroit’s special touch. After the sold-out Brussels’ concerts, Détroit will be at the Festival des Libertés.
