Le quatrième mur is the invisible wall separating the stage from the audience and reality from fiction. It is also the title of a novel by Sorj Chalandon, which tells the story of a young French woman’s attempt to stage a production of Anouilh’s Antigone in 1974 at Bayreuth. Julien Bouffier uses this narrative to explore again the position held by politics and history between a piece of theatre and its documentary origins.
