Salvador Allende Award: “The ultimate goal of a democratic system is to have an equitable sharing of wealth. When this doesn’t work, it is legitimate to resist. Still, it’s unlikely to find peace by destroying others. The Middle East is unfortunately sinking into endless conflicts. Luckily, there are pacifistic initiatives to resist the conflictual ideologies perpetuated from generation to generation, even though the reasons for these conflicts are sometimes long forgotten. The world is changing, and so are the reasons for being in conflict. By raising awareness about these aspects, we can see possibilities for dialogue and change. Centre SA and the municipality of Evere would like to contribute to peace in this region by giving this award to the documentary Disturbing the Peace by film-makers Stephen Apkon and Andrew Young. We are convinced that a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would greatly help bring peace to this region of the world. As such, pacifistic initiatives, such as those shown in this documentary, need to be praised and featured in the international media.”
Israëliërs en Palestijnen, allen zijn ze in het conflict geboren en groeiden ze ermee op. Of ze nu een doorsnee burger, een soldaat of een kandidaat-martelaar zijn, door hun persoonlijke geschiedenis zien ze in de ander per definitie de vijand. Maar op een dag beleven ze iets dat hun standpunt doet wankelen. Ze trotseren hun lot en geven de vrede een kans door een ander pad te bewandelen: dat van de dialoog en van de geweldloosheid.
