IFHR Honourable Mention: “IFHR would also like to give an honourable mention to City of Ghosts, a gripping documentary about the efforts of a group of brave citizen-journalists who create the platform Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently, risking their lives to document the horrors of their daily lives under Isis rule. It’s a deadly game of cat and mouse, and even in exile, they aren’t safe. IFHR would like to salute the work of journalists and their essential role in democracy.”
Terwijl IS Raqqa bezet en met executies terroriseert, werken Syrische partizanen – in het geheim en op gevaar voor eigen leven – samen om de wereld te informeren. Met smartphones stuurt het plaatselijke team foto's naar de collega's buiten het gebied, die ze verder verspreiden en aan de bel trekken. 'Een camera vermag meer dan een pistool…' De oorlog vindt namelijk ook in de media plaats – en dat heeft IS zelf maar al te goed begrepen. Een film waar je helemaal stil van wordt.
