A long sentence, how does it tell? In his latest feature, which he filmed with former long-term prisoners, director Didier Ruiz puzzles out the dual meaning of the word peine, which means both ‘pain’ and ‘[prison] sentence’ in French. In the suspended time of rehearsals, we watch all of these men transform -- including the director. This is a film about prison and how it carves invisible, indelible marks in the flesh.
