In reflection of this complex era rife with unilateral and antagonistic positions, many countries are finding themselves embroiled in political crises within which checks and balances seem to play a key role. In response to democratic demands and dissident trends, we’re seeing the emergence of specific coalitions between governments, pro-government media and upholders of the constitutional system.
The rule of law is the keystone of the democratic system and the separation of powers its essential guarantor. The turbulent events being witnessed in Ecuador, Catalonia, Hungary, Brazil, etc. are all notable for strategies which provoke cause for concern from the democratic perspective and which can flare up on any square of the political chess board. The manipulation of penal systems and of public opinion, the exclusion of dissidents, the disincentivization of challenge… How can sense be made of this tangled web of phenomena and new alliances forged?
Whatever the truths that will emerge from these troubled times, the question of a citizens’ dynamic is now being posed. Isn’t it time for a global analysis of this issue, in order to reinvent an internationalisation of the democratic struggles being faced by citizens, the media and the courts, as a vital base for the establishment of appropriate power relationships and counter balances?
