Charles Leval, aka Levalet, grew up in Guadeloupe, where he first encountered the urban culture and then the visual arts. He went on to study Visual Arts in Strasbourg. His work, which then focussed on video, was deeply rooted in theatrical practices.
Levalet’s artwork is above all a work of drawing and installation. Drawn with Chinese ink, his characters are staged in the public space, in a visual and semantic dialogue with the current environment. The characters interact with the architecture, which often unfolds in nearing absurd situations.
