Over the decades, what gains have actually been made in terms of rights and freedoms for women, sexual minorities and vulnerable people? In the name of what vision of secularism? This gathering will offer an opportunity to shatter myths about the way secularism is experienced in Belgium, while at the same time highlighting the tensions and challenges that plague it. Marking the 50th anniversary of the Centre d’Action Laïque and the 40th of Bruxelles Laïque, this session will take stock of the development, dynamism and challenges surrounding secularism in Belgium.
