The jury from the Centre d’Action Laïque chose to present their award to Exit, by Karen Winther. The jury especially appreciated its first-person narrative form, which brings about a powerful and deep immersion into the psychological and social mechanisms which lead to radicalisation. Against the backdrop of a current Belgian political scene facing a dangerous rise in far-right extremism, the Centre d’Action Laïque has decided to bank on complexity and education and this film is a clear manifestation of that. By looking at a variety of individual stories that share a xenophobic and violent approach, the film-maker highlights dark trajectories but also paths of resilience and solidarity. Her humanistic, informative and emancipatory approach convinced the Centre d’Action Laïque to award her its prize for this 2019 selection.
