With Exit, the Norwegian film-maker Karen Winther takes us on a personal trip exploring her extremist past. She seeks to understand what can push some people to join extremist groups, whether left, right or Islamist. With great sensitivity, she interviews de-radicalised people from several countries who have taken the difficult, complicated and dangerous step of leaving the world of violent extremism.
Exit is an intense and moving documentary which asks simple, yet fascinating questions: How do the de-radicalised leave a past of hate and violence behind them? How do they deal with the violence that shaped them, often throughout their youth? How do they find the courage to face others and look them in the eye?
The FIDH jury lauded Karen Winther for taking them on this journey and forcing them to tackle these thorny issues.
