The penal system, of which punishment is its cornerstone, protects only a tiny minority of women from violence. Should they have confidence in this system? Which victims have access to justice, and which perpetrators are brought before it? What can we say about the symbolic weight of criminal sanctions, and what impact do they have in preventing violence against women? Is a transformative, female-centred justice possible?
