Constellation 1961

Action 30, L’autre « lieu », Bruxelles Laïque, Théâtre National

Italy - Belgium

It all started in 1961 when Franco Basaglia took over running a psychiatric hospital and decided to throw open its doors. That same year, authors from very different backgrounds independently published major works which question the treatment of mental illness by the medical world and society: Foucault, Goffman, Fanon, etc. All of this coalesced to create the conditions for a radical transformation of Italian psychiatry, outlining a new landscape of what is possible and transcending the boundaries of the mental health field to impact upon society, institutions and individuals. It is this experiment with the possible that Constellation 1961 seeks to convey, fitting it into the current global context by means of a spectacular performance in which sound, text, voices and images from yesterday and today are mixed live in order to spark an invigorating energy. After a first phase of the work presented in 2011, the project’s new refined incarnation is transformed in all its artistic dimensions and enhanced by a firm anchoring it in our present day.

The performance will be followed by a collective discussion (Fr).
