Crise et Emocratie : retour à la soumission ?

Français

Is our democracy now leaning towards an emocracy? Or more precisely, an emotocracy: the power of emotion, when it dictates the law to the authorities or when the latter use it to impose themselves. In a period of crisis, the particularly exacerbated fear dulls criticism, increases withdrawal, favours subservience and falls back easily on scapegoats. Is this governance ‘by fear’ is a way of renewing a democratic order that has lost its legitimacy, of masking the reasons for the crisis and justifying increased security measures? Are the politics of resistance and emancipation not a product of dominated fear and averted pain?

With Christiane Vollaire (philosopher, author of numerous articles in Chimères, Lignes, Transeuropéeennes), Christian Panier (a former magistrate, professor of procedural law at UCL), Jean-Jacques Jespers (journalist, professor in the journalism faculty of ULB).

Moderator: Benoît Feyt (Cellule Europe et international – CAL)
