To mark the 15th anniversary of the death of the great Nigerian musician-composer, political leader and anti-corruption activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Festival des Libertés will close with a concert by Antibalas. This Afrobeat group from Brooklyn was founded on the model of Africa 70’… It distils politically charged messages backed by powerful groove and Afrobeat rhythms. Its style is a blend of roots Afrobeat, jazz and funk. Having performed several times on stage with Fela’s sons Femi and Seun and with the famed drummer and architect of Afrobeat Tony Allen, Antibalas has become the leading light of modern Afrobeat, thanks to its brilliant stage act. This is the group that best incarnates the spirit of Fela and the political vocation of this musical style born from oppression and dictatorship.
