Sant’Anna, a small village of 500 residents in southern Italy, is home to a detention centre for asylum seekers with a capacity of nearly 1,500 persons. After initially being confined to the centre, the migrants have, since 2007, been able to move about the village from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. This situation sparks racism and xenophobia from the exasperated natives. The asylum seekers can do nothing about it and are forced to wait for months in an atmosphere of contempt and hatred.
