In Iran, the Women’s Rugby Federation was founded in 2004. Soon thereafter, Ahmadinejad came to power and tried to stifle women’s interest in this sport. Still, more than 1,000 Iranian women play rugby, not only for their love of the sport but also as a way to enjoy a little freedom in a country where, by law, a woman is worth half a man.
