Spring 1989. Hu Yaobang, a Chinese Communist leader, dies. Young people gather in cities throughout China (most of all in Beijing, at Tiananmen Square) and begin talking freely about democracy and political reforms. The movement grows and affects all parts of China. A wind of hope blows on Chinese youth. But then on 4 June, the movement is stamped out bloodily, with 300 to 3,000 deaths according to different estimates.
