Gaël Turine tells stories with images, like others tell them with words. With the discretion and restraint of a family friend, he lets us share in the daily lives of Haitian voodoo practitioners, Afghan youths, Bolivian miners, Moscow’s homeless, Belgian prisoners and, most recently, Sudanese refugees. The empathy he shows for the people he photographs never gives way to a superficial aestheticism: there are no visual effects, as easy as they are useless, in his images, which breathe simplicity and evoke the warmth of a friend’s gaze. Telling stories with images doesn‘t necessarily mean manipulating those images.

Particularly interested by reporting over the long haul, Gael Turine is the author of several books including Voodoo, which came out after five years of work about the voodoo cult, from its origins to Africa to its present-day practice in Haiti and the United States. His work is regularly published in the Belgian and international press and has also been exhibited in galleries and museums.
The exhibit Other Worlds, in particular, highlights some shared concerns with Festivals des Libertés: bearing witness, challenging and denouncing.
