On the margins of European citizenship

The construction of the European Union goes hand in hand with the promotion of European citizenship. It's an idea that may seem a little abstract or even sound hollow... How is this citizenship being experienced? How is it invoked or contested? By whom? Many people have already been excluded from this citizenship, such as EU residents from non-member countries, Roma, prostitutes, Turks and stateless persons. Still, they are striving to make their voices heard and to claim their rights. They are, in fact, practicing forms of citizenship. The European research project ENACT has studied these practices with the aim of examining the concept and limits of European citizenship. Researchers, political scientists, legal experts and European civil servants will share their viewpoints on these issues during the debate.

With Elspeth Guild (Centre for European Policy Studies, Radbout University), Angela Liberatore (European Commission) and Jef Huysmans (Open University, UK) and et Ivan Ivanov (European Office of Roms Information).
