Biodiversity: A political issue
2010 has been declared the Global Year of Biodiversity. For the European citizen who is concerned about the planet as well as what's in his or her plate, it is essential to be aware of what is happening on the European level. As with agriculture, commercial fishing is governed by the European Union and is a political issue that will have a major effect on the future of biodiversity. The European Union, in which 80% of surveyed fishing stocks are overexploited, is described as one of the key actors in overfishing. The 2012 reform of the Common Fisheries Policy is the opportunity to end overfishing and destructive fishing practices in order to inaugurate an era of sustainable, just and fair management of ocean resources.
With Charles Clover (author of the book The End of the Line), Isabella Lövin (Swedish member of European parliament), Kriton Arsenis (Greek MEP, member of the Fisheries Committee) and Béatrice Gorez (Coalition for Fair Fisheries Arrangements - OCEAN 2012).
